Frequently
asked questions
What material is the tent made of?
The Vision fly is made of “ripstop” materials, which are resistant to tearing. The walls have a waterproof and vapor-permeable polyurethane coating, thanks to which, in addition to protecting against rain and wind, they also provide breathability. The tent always remains dry inside.
The wall in contact with the rock is made of Cordura 5020 PU membrane to ensure great durability in contact with sharp edges. The tent floor (Polyester 300 D) surrounds the portaledge structure underneath, so that gusts of wind do not get inside, and even the smallest elements of your equipment will never fall out. The floor has ventilation holes secured with mesh, ensuring circulation and removal of air when packing up the tent.
Double-sided entrances with a width of 2/3 of the entire side wall open from top to bottom using splash-proof zippers. The zippers are additionaly protected by storm flaps. Seams can be further protected by user with the included Fast Cure Seam Sealant.
What material is the ledge floor made of?
The floor is made of Nylon 210D UltraGrid™ ripstop reinforced with Dyneema® mesh. This material is partially used in two layers. The floor is tensioned on the frame using five straps, two of which are pre-threaded for setup without removing them from the buckles.
What material is the frame made of?
Straight Sections: 30×1.5 mm tubing crafted from 2024 alloy—a certified, high-strength aerospace-grade aluminum.
Bent Corners: 28×2 mm tubing made from 6063 alloy, chosen for its medium-strength ductility. The corner ends are precision-tapered, allowing the frame elements to connect directly and seamlessly form our signature V-shaped structure.
Side Connectors: The midpoints of the longest sides are reinforced with heavy-duty 27×3 mm aluminum connectors.
Internal Shock Cord: An internal elastic cord runs through all the tubing, keeping the disassembled frame securely organized for transport and ensuring lightning-fast deployment on the wall.
Torsional Rigidity: Unlike most standard portaledges that tend to warp diagonally under tension, our support frame creates and maintains a perfectly flat, rigid plane.
Do I need to step off the ledge and clear it to set up the fly?
No. You can set up the rainfly entirely from inside the portaledge in under 5 minutes. Start from the air side, pulling the fly on frame like a sock. When you reach the rock, sit with your back to the air, push off the wall with your feet to make a gap, and slide the back of the fly up between the frame and the rock. Zip it up, and the tent is ready.
How durable is this portaledge?
Vision Portaledges are engineered for extreme big-wall environments, static load-tested up to 400 kg and field-proven under 200 kg active expedition loads. When set up on proper rock support points and used strictly according to the user manual, it offers a fully secure and reliable wall shelter. While designed for maximum stability, no portaledge is part of a belay system — its structural rating is body weight only, requiring climbers to remain tied directly into the main belay anchor at all times. The only point on the portaledge certified to 22 kN is the main suspension strap along with the locking carabiner, which can serve as self-protection.
Is there any protection against sharp rock?
Yes. Our portaledge is built with triple protection system against sharp rock. The corners of the “wall” frame of the portaledge are protected by spiral PVC overlays. The floor has a sewn-in reinforcement made of polyester tape where it touches the rock. The tent is equipped with CORDURA 770 DTEX protectors, attached with Velcro, so they can be easily dismantled for repair or replacement.
Why Vision doesn't hang sideways against the wall?
Our unique, trapezoid design allows the portaledge to rest frontally against the wall (V-shape configuration). We designed it this way to solve several critical issues found in standard sideways ledges:
Unmatched Stability & Independence: In a traditional sideways setup, if one person needs to get up (to access haul bags, use the toilet, or exit), the weight shift causes dangerous tilting, forcing both climbers to coordinate their movements. In our frontal configuration, the rotating axis is much shorter. One climber can move or exit independently without destabilizing the ledge.
Superior Ergonomics: Sideways ledges require you to constantly awkwardly rotate in a tight space—sitting crosswise to cook, then rotating simultaneously to lie down. In our design, both climbers are positioned at the exit. Transitioning from a sitting to a sleeping position is much easier.
Zero “Strap Crush”: When hung on a flat wall, traditional sideways ledges force the climber on the outer (air) side into the suspension straps. Our V-shape geometry completely eliminates this issue, maximizing usable space and comfort.
Smaller Wall Footprint: Because the ledge rests on its shorter side, it requires significantly less rock space, making it much easier to find a suitable hanging spot.
Faster Deployment: The symmetrical, frontal alignment makes setting up the portaledge simpler, faster, and more intuitive after a long day on the wall.
