Frame & Structural Strength
The structure is based on a rigid aluminum frame. The portaledge has been rigorously tested under a static, total load of 400 kg, and repeatedly field-tested on the wall under the load of two climbers with equipment (exceeding a total of 200 kg).
Suspension System
The suspension relies on polyester straps, with the strength of a single strap rated at about 1000 kg and bucklets 180 kg.
Advanced Rock Protection
To ensure durability against sharp rock, every portaledge has a multi-level protection system:
-
Corner Safeguards: The corners of the aluminum “wall” frame are protected by spiral PVC overlays.
-
Floor Reinforcement: The ledge floor features a polyester sewn-in tape reinforcement along the edge where it directly touches the rock.
-
Tent Protectors: The tent itself is equipped with heavy-duty CORDURA 770 DTEX protectors. These are attached with Velcro, meaning they can be easily dismantled for quick repair or replacement.
Wall Angle Compatibility
The portaledge works best and most efficiently on a strictly vertical wall. However, it can also be safely hung in overhangs and on walls with a slope of up to 60 degrees. (Note: The smaller the angle of inclination of the wall, the greater the forces acting on the structure).
Safety & Usage Guidelines
Belay System Rule
No portaledge is an element of the belay system. No portaledge is an element of the belay system. While designed for maximum stability, no portaledge is part of a belay system — its structural rating is body weight only, requiring climbers to remain tied directly into the main belay anchor at all times. The only point on the portaledge certified to 22 kN is the main suspension strap along with the locking carabiner, which can serve as self-protection.
Proper Wall Placement
The rock on which the set-up portaledge rests should be as even as possible. Support points must be distributed along the entire edge, or safely placed on two support points located near the corners. It is strictly unacceptable to lean the portaledge on a single point halfway across its width, as this could break the aluminum “wall” pipe.
Weight Distribution & Adjustment
The portaledge should always be loaded as evenly as possible.
During setup and adjustment: Only one person is allowed to stay inside.
The Air Side: The outer edge must never be loaded with the weight of more than one person.
Standing Rule: You should never stand with your full body weight directly on the aluminum frame between the suspension straps. In extreme cases, this concentrated force may break the frame.
